The Dangers of Arguing on the Internet

We've all been there.

You're scrolling through your Facebook feed or perusing Linkedin, and you see something that sets you off.

Before you know it, you're in a full-blown argument with someone you don't even know—and it's all taking place online.

But is it really worth your time and energy to engage in these digital shouting matches?

Let's take a closer look at the downside of arguing on the internet.

1. It's a Time Suck

We all have limited time on this earth, so why waste it arguing with people you don't even know?

If you spend an hour arguing with someone online, that's an hour you could have spent doing something productive or enjoyable.

So ask yourself before you start typing away: is this really how I want to spend my time?

2. It's Emotionally Draining

Getting into arguments can be emotionally draining, especially if they're with people who are particularly good at getting under your skin.

If you find yourself getting worked up every time you log onto social media, it might be time to take a break.

Remember, you don't owe anyone your time or energy—so don't give it away if it's not making you happy.

3. It's Not Going to Change Anyone's Mind

Have you ever changed your mind after getting into an argument with someone online?

Chances are, probably not.

People tend to dig their heels in when they're arguing, which makes it unlikely that either party will convince the other to see things their way.

So why bother?

If you're not going to change anyone's mind, and no one's going to change yours, what's the point?

4. It Can Damage Your Reputation

If you're regularly engaging in arguments online, people are going to start seeing you as someone who likes to stir up drama.

This can damage your reputation and make it difficult for people to take you seriously—which is especially problematic if you're trying to build a personal brand or grow your business.

5. It Can Hurt Your Mental Health

Finally, engaging in arguments online can take a toll on your mental health.

If social media is making you anxious or stressed out, it might be time to delete your accounts or take a break from them altogether.

Your mental health is more important than any argument—so don't forget that the next time someone gets under your skin online.

The next time you find yourself getting into an argument with someone online, ask yourself if it's really worth your time and energy.

Chances are, the answer will be no—so save yourself the trouble and walk away from the keyboard.

You'll be much better off for it in the long run!
